This series consists of correspondence relating to conscientious objectors, which was withdrawn from the series "Central Files, 1940-1947" (NAID Identifier 1184657). Included are files for classification 345 "conscientious objectors," 345.1 "work camps," 345.2 "Jehovah's Witnesses," 450 "work camp projects," and 451 "camp supplies." Projects represented include work on dairy farms and medical projects sponsored by the Office of Scientific Research and Development. Petitions from individuals and organizations concerning the 1943 Danbury prison hunger strike can be found near the end of the series. Most of the correspondence is addressed to Lewis Blaine Hershey, the long time director of the Selective Service System.

Lewis Blaine Hershey (September 12, 1893 – May 20, 1977) was the Director of the Selective Service System of the United States. An Indiana native, Hershey joined the National Guard in 1911. His unit served at the Mexican border in 1916. After World War I, he moved to the Army and became a captain in 1920.
